Back pain is a musculoskeletal disorder that affects most people at some point in their lives. Some types of back pain are usually caused by sudden movements, bending awkwardly or lifting heavy items incorrectly. However, sometimes it is a result of more serious injuries such as slipped discs, sciatica and whiplash, or diseases such as degenerative disc disease, spinal stenosis and osteoporosis. Despite being a common problem that most people recover from relatively quickly, for those that experience severe, long-term pain, physiotherapy is the key to improvement.
Physiotherapy is a science-based profession involving various different treatments that help to improve strength and movement and reduce the risk of future injury. The main aspect of this kind of therapy is the focus on the advice given concerning general well-being, overall health and how to prevent future injury. Lifting and carrying techniques are demonstrated and tips on how to maintain a good posture will ensure that back pain is managed to a reasonable degree.
The wide range of physiotherapy treatments available to patients in Ealing will obviously depend upon which physiotherapist you decide to visit. The most common treatment, and perhaps the most effective, is manipulation therapy. This is where the therapist will manually manipulate the spine and back muscles to relieve pain and stiffness, improve circulation and encourage better movement. Manipulation therapy will also help to promote relaxation which is a vital part of the healing process.
With a mixture of both passive and active exercises, another essential aspect of physiotherapy is exercise therapy which involves the use of heat application and electrical stimulation and involves specific physical movements and stretches. Through these exercises, strength can be restored and the risk of future injury can be minimised.
Known as the soft tissue therapy, physiotherapists use massage techniques on the affected area to stimulate blood circulation and relieve pain. Electrotherapy, on the other hand, is done when electrical impulses are used to stimulate nerves. Both methods are effective Ealing physio treatments for sufferers of back pain and spinal injuries.
Physiotherapists work independently and will therefore decide on the best course of treatments depending on individual needs and circumstances. If after several sessions of therapy the pain has not improved, the therapist may as well re-evaluate the treatments used and adjust their approach to achieve the desired result.
